Training, Arthritis, and Avoiding Replacement

Hi guys,

I was on the forums not too long ago with a case of MRSA septic arthritis from old surgical hardware. The infection ate a substantial amount of cartilage in the acetabulum. However, doc says my femur is still looking good and he’d like my hip to last me the rest of my life but that it may need replaced. Anyways, wanted to share an x-ray and receive some input on long term pain and training management strategies for a young individual (I’m 24) with the hip of someone who is perhaps much older. The surgical instrument in the bottom photo is simply illustrating the hole from the hardware to the joint cavity that permitted the sepsis to enter the joint. The top photo is my old, pre infection hip with hardware.

Unfortunately individualized recommendations in this complex case are beyond the scope of the forum and would be best addressed via an individual consult.

With that said, there aren’t unique training strategies that we would recommend for such a situation outside of the standard approach – progressive strength training using fatigue/load management strategies (e.g., RPE-based autoregulation).
