UA Sports Mask

This could have just as easily been posted to the Training section so excuse me if this is the wrong place.

I am required to wear a mask to work, and wear one daily when near other people. It is homemade, two layers of cotton with a pocket for a filter, I have been using synthetic shop towels in the pocket as a disposable filter. By all accounts this is a fairly good non-medical mask for daily wear.

I just recently got back into the gym after a eight week COVID-19 break. I also bought one of the new Under Armour sports mask for training. It’s three layers of synthetic fabric. It’s supposed to work a little like goretex, where it’s let’s out moist air, but prevents water droplets from entering, and it has some fabric in the middle which is describes as anti-viral. The masks have been backordered, but mine is supposed to come this week.

My question, I can’t find any third party sources that have tested this mask design, just various marketing materials from the manufacturer. I even did some scientific literature searching (I’m a PhD scientist, just not in the medical field).

Is this $30 mask any better than my $6 mask I bought from a local seamstress?

Like you, I don’t know of any direct / comparative evidence here either, unfortunately.

I just happened to read a WaPost article about this earlier. First link is the article second link is the study itself. Talks about how the experiment was setup with guides to do it so someone with reasonable knowledge and access to equipment can replicate and test what they and others in their community are using.

Hope it’s helpful!
