Unsure of what plan to run after two injuries.

Hello,

About seven months ago I herniated a disk in my low back and had acute pain shooting down the right leg. Saw a doctor, they gave me a shot, I adjusted training to stay lifting while dealing with the pain. Started on hypertrophy, and on week two or three, I had another injury. I was laid out for the weekend, ran the back rehab plan the following monday, said screw the dr this time, recovered much quicker which I believe is due to less time waiting to train. However, I’ve noticed that when I start climbing back up in weight, I get a feeling, like a “twinge” in my back, like it’s about to happen again, even when using my belt. I felt that last squatting around 275 for four reps. So I’m concerned about continuing hypertrophy. I got the body building plan for more isolated work with higher volume, but all I have at home is a barbell and weights, which up till now sufficed. So my question is, can any of the other powerlifting focused plans be ran, compensating intensity with higher volume? Or should I just continue hypertrophy? I can’t risk further injury. Let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

GB,

Thanks for the post and I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better. I think the important part of your journey forward needs to be rebuilding work capacity, confidence, and resiliency- which is probably best accomplished via becoming proficient across a broad range of exercises, rep ranges, etc. while gradually building volume at manageable intensities.

I think the hypertrophy plan would be fine in achieving these aims and you can get creative as you like for exercise selection to fit what you have right now. Let me know what questions you have!
