Update: Inguinal Hernia and Training

Hello Dr. Feigenbaum,

Well, my ultrasound results came back to show bilateral inguinal hernias as well as a 1.1cm umbilical hernia. Talked with the surgeon on Tuesday and I have surgery scheduled for June 9th. He will use robotic laparoscopic with mesh for the bilateral inguinal hernia repairs and an open w/out mesh on the umbilical.

In our previous discussion (which was very helpful btw), you stated the current guidelines for post inguinal repair have not changed.

“If it were me, I would likely resume activities that were tolerable immediately, gradually expanding upon them as I am able to. Again, I cannot make a specific recommendation for you through the forum. I need more information and follow up via consultation to feel comfortable doing so.”

Since I am having an umbilical hernia repair at the same time, what are the guidelines for umbilical restrictions based on the current evidence? Would your “if it were me” statement still apply or would it change?

BTW, my surgeon is still recommending nothing over 20lbs for six weeks for either inguinal or umbilical repairs. Reminds me of the surgeon who had an interview with who recommendations also contradicted the current guidelines.

I really appreciate your help! Thanks!
Paul

Hey Paul,

Sounds like you’re getting things taken care of. Happy to hear it!

Regarding an umbilical hernia repair, there aren’t really any guidelines for return to sport or activity. I cannot give you medical advice, but yes, if it were me I would plan on getting back to tolerable activities as soon as I can. This is my general approach to most post-op activities unless there is good reason to take a unique approach.

Again, this is not medical advice.
