In 2013 I had aortic root replacement with freestyle bioprosthesis and reconstruction of ascending aorta with interposition graft. I have an annual echo and exam by my cardiologist. He knows I lift weights. He has expressed zero concern as my heart has been functioning like a champ since surgery. While I have talked to my doc extensively about lifting weights, I didn’t specifically discuss Valsalva with him. I sent him an email to specifically ask about Valsalva. If it is recommended not to Valsalva (hopefully that won’t be the case), what other breathing techniques can I use while lifting heavy weights?
Hey Ryan,
Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum.
As far as what other breathing techniques are available to you besides the Valsalva- there aren’t any. You will perform a Valsalva whether you want to or not when the weight gets heavy or effort becomes significant. So, if he says “no you can’t valsalva”- you’ll need to press for more information on the risks/benefits and why.
