Valsalva maneuver

I heard from many coaches and even doctors saying that valsalva maneuver is dangerous and people should avoid it, especially if they have high blood preasure. So i was wondering, my uncle has high blood preasure 150/90. He has never lifted any weights, but has dicided to give it a shot for health purposes. Is ok for him to start weight training since the loads will not be so big? His goal is just to gain some muscles and get blood preasure to normal levels.

lso i don’t understand why is valsalva maneuver dangerous since the blood preasure goes back down after you finish a heavy set. Isn’t valsalva maneuver natural human response when lifting something heavy or even if someone is trying to punch us in the stomach? Why do people make it look like something so dangerous?

Best regards,
Tvoja

Is he currently taking any medicines?

His current situation does not present a problem when it comes to intelligent strength training and use of the valsalva.

Take a listen to one of our early podcasts on high blood pressure.

Yes he is. Doctors said he must take them for the rest of his life. I thinks it’s Ampril HL, HD. Ok, great! He will be very happy about that.

Ok, i will listen that podcast. Thank you!
