Veganism in adolescence

Hello Drs!

I found out recently that my 12 year old nephew has decided to become a vegan. He loves animals and became a pescetarian vegetarian about a year ago, but now wants to become a full vegan, and I’m a little concerned about how this diet could affect him during his adolescent years.

I was wondering if you’re aware of any information about how a vegan diet could affect him during this important developmental time? Or, do you have any suggestions about what considerations his parents should make with regards his diet?

He’s a fit and healthy boy and we’ve been talking about me introducing him to weight training in this coming summer.

Thanks for your help.

As far as I know, a vegan diet wouldn’t negatively effect him during this time provided he is mature enough to make sure he gets in all of his vitamins, eats a variety of different foods for protein, and eats enough calories to continue to grow appropriately.

Great, thanks Jordan. I’m going to do some research into how he can make sure he gets all he needs into his diet and pass that on to his parents.

Thanks for your help!
