Hello,
I apologize if this becomes redundant as my first attempt to post seems to have failed.
This past May I had a laparoscopic distal pancreactomy/splenectomy. I developed a small hernia of intra abdominal fat at the incision site just inferior of the umbilicus a few months after. I gained 20lbs after the surgery which may have been the biggest contributing factor although I was powerlifting at the time. The hernia was repaired last week robotically with mesh placed. Returning to lifting has obvious concerns so I suppose I’m looking for a confidence boost as I’m sure you’ve worked with clients who successfully returned to powerlifting after abdominal hernia repairs. My first priority will be fat loss. Returning to lifting, do you recommend wearing an abdominal binder for some time. Any other recommendations to minimize recurrence such as starting with higher rep assignments, etc? Thank you.
Tim
We have all trained many folks who returned to normal training after mesh hernia repair.
If you have gained a significant amount of bodyfat, then yes, that would be an important part of this. I do not think that continuing to wear an abdominal binder is necessary beyond whatever duration may have initially been recommended by your surgeon. Finally, starting with “higher rep assignments” is unlikely to influence the long-term risk of recurrence. Once cleared from the surgical standpoint, I would start a novice LP, and you may start lighter if that makes you feel more comfortable.
Thank you, Dr. Baraki. Novice LP even for weight loss? Would you recommend a GPP day or two while cutting?
Thank you, Dr. Baraki. Any additional benefit to doing a GPP program before returning to LP (for cutting)or programming in GPP if LP did still ideal?
