Vitamin D

First time poster on the forum  I’ve come to realize that BBM are the only doctors I trust lol. I posted this in the FB group awhile ago but was hoping to get one of the doctors’ feedback
And I do apologize if this post is annoying cause I know Vitamin D has been talked about quite a bit here. I’m gathering from everything that I’ve read that supplementing Vitamin D isn’t necessary unless you’re actually deficient (makes sense) but I recently had a bunch of blood work done due to irregular cycles, the OBGYN seems to think I have hypothyroidism based on the results and she put me on levothyroxine, but she also tested my Vitamin D levels and said I’m low and need to supplement 2000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily and 100 mcg of Vitamin K2 (MK7 type) and recheck in 2-3 months. I started the levothyroxine and kinda disregarded the Vitamin D supplementation. It says the normal range is 30-100 and I’m at 25.2. Is this concerningly low and should I get on top of taking the supplements she recommended? I’m just not a fan of taking a bunch of supplements especially given the fact that so many are contaminated. Thanks in advance for your help!!!

A level of 25 is not especially concerning, and would not explain menstrual irregularity.

Often times, blood Vitamin D levels decrease in the setting of other health issues, and when those health issues are addressed, we see improvements in blood vitamin D levels without supplementation (although this is not a universal rule, there are certainly situations where supplementation would be recommended). So, I’d check out this article ( Where should my priorities be to improve my health? ) and make sure you’re checking off as many of those recommendations as possible, get the hypothyroidism addressed, and it would be safe to recheck the Vit D level down the line to see whether its improved spontaneously.

Hi Austin, thanks so much for your response. I love the article you shared and will be sharing that with my PT clients!!! I just had the Vitamin D levels checked again (OBGYN’s orders) and it dropped from 25 to 20 and she’s demanding I supplement. My thyroid issues seem to be resolved since taking the meds (cycles are back to being regular!) so I’m not sure why the Vitamin D level is dropping! I workout 6 days a week (3 days resistance training, 3 days cardio) I get 7-8 hours of sleep and I eat a healthy diet with a focus on protein and calories. The only thing I struggle to manage is stress, but I can’t imagine chronic stress impacts Vitamin D??!!! LOL
