Hello Docs,
Male, Caucasian, 32, 186 lbs, 34.5 inch waist measured at ASIS.
I’m continuing my weight loss stint starting in August of last year. I am losing appx 6 lbs per inch of waistline measured at the ASIS. I was eating appx .9g/lb of protein, eating moderate carb and fat, doing 30 minutes of LISS conditioning every morning, eating at a 350-500 cal deficit, and running Bodybuilding 1. 6 lbs/inch seems to indicate an unfavorable lean mass to fat loss ratio.
I have a few questions-
1.) Do fat storage patterns or general anatomy differences in individuals impact this at all? My lovehandle region seems to be a particularly stubborn. The rest of my body has leaned out fairly well.
2.) I measure my waist weekly. Would it be beneficial to measure at the ASIS AND my umbelicus? My umbelicus measurement is a full inch smaller than at the ASIS.
3.) I want to utilize waist to gauge when to cut and bulk in the future- cutting down to 32", then bulking to just below 35". Would one of these be a better measurement over the other for that purpose?

I think one question to ask is how quickly are you losing weight?
To your questions:
-
Yes, though the area you describe is commonly one of the last to resolve. Question 2 is relevant here as well.

There’s quite a bit of nuance around where to measure. Measuring at the umbilicus is oftent most sensitive to visceral fat and is often easiest to identify, but then again, people have belly buttons in different places. Measuring ~1" lower at ASIS can be more repeatable, whereas a mid-point between the last rib and ASIS is sometimes used. I don’t think you need to measure both though. Pick one and keep using it.

I’d use a waist to height ratio. If/when you get to the ~ 0.5 range, you can consider slow weight gain.

I was losing about 3 lbs a month. Much earlier on when I was in the mid 210s I was going for 2lbs/week, but that hasn’t been the case since fall.
I think I’m going to stick with ASIS to not invalidate months of waist measuremsnts.
I think I’m currently below that measurement. At 6’ with a 34.5" waist puts me around a .48. Would 36" be my upper limit? I was planning on trying to get to 32" inches to have a prolonged bulk, gaining 2 lbs per month long term. I found 32" from other threads you’ve posted in, but I don’t know if that applies to my case.

It’s a fine if you want to start gaining weight, though I’d prefer a period of weight maintenance after losing weight for ~ 4-6 weeks.
