Wanting some general thoughts on RPE ratings for singles

Jordan, good afternoon and hope you’ve been well.

Currently on Block 2 Week 3 of PB 1 Gen 2. Was listening to one of the programming podcast recently and you an Austin talked about how performance can vary as much as 5 to 10% on a given day. This got me thinking, every now and then, i have a day where i know I dont feel it, and go down in weight, and every now and then I have a good day and do more, but for the most part other than gradual performance increase over time, my week to week performance it pretty consistent, which made me think, am I really using RPE, or am I forcing it?

This got me thinking about RPE more, and paying more attention to my ratings over the past few weeks. With that said, I’ve never really had any outsode opinions on my RPE rating and was hoping you could provide me your thiughts of the two videos. I also attached my training log for the day. I recognize its difficult to judge RPE from the video.

Some context, the 1st one I called a 7. It moved very well, and never slowed. RPE calculator indicated 375 for my RPE 8 attemempt. This attempt was definitely difficullt. I was in between 8 to 8.5. It took focus on my part, out of the whole felt like a slight stick but i focused and pushed through. Velocity slowed, but i was never in damger of missing the rep. I ultimately called it an 8. In reading the PDF of the program, i think it fits. That being said, it implies a max of 405. Not sure i could actually add 30 pounds and hit it. This makes me think ive overshot the RPE.

Back off work is challenging, but not insanely hard, you can see my RPE ratings. This makes me think my RPE was correct. Hopefully all of this makes sense for you to provide your general thoughts. As usual, thanks for all you do.

Hey Matte,

Thanks for the post. I would predict week to week performance is likely to be pretty similar, as performance varies within ~ 5% or so (with no change in fitness) and demonstrable fitness changes take longer than a few weeks to manifest. Due to current time constraints, I have to reserve video review for clients. However, I watched yours and I think these RPE ratings are good by me.

Awesome, thanks Jordan. Really appreciate the time. I know RPE doesnt have to be perfect, and is a skill, but appreciate the feedback. Helps give me a lot of confidence in my training and RPE ratings that you think the ratings are reasonable.

Totally understand the video review and your time. Im still amazed at how available you are to this community for free. Soon Im going to submit for a form check, as ive never had any coaching on form either. Just need to video my backoff sets in order to get some multi rep sets to submit. Would this angle be sufficient for a form check?

This angle is fine! Appreciate the kind words. Keep up the good work.
