Weight loss for BJJ

Hey guys,

I have been lifting for just over a year and put on considerable muscle and also some weight around the belly. I’m currently sitting at 84kg (184 pounds) standing at 172 cm (5’6).

I formerly competed in BJJ tournaments in 67kg (147) and 73kg (160) divisions. I haven’t competed in 4 years and I’m interested in competing in 8 weeks and not sure what weight division I should aim for. I know I will never make 73kg but my options are 77kg (170) or 84kg. I feel at 77 kg my confidence would be higher but I’m wondering if this kind of weight loss would negatively impact my training leading up to the competition.

I’m currently lifting 3x per week and training BJJ 3 - 4X per week. My BJJ sessions are generally sparring and usually last no longer than 30 minutes.

Thank you!

I would plan on competing as you weigh right now or push back the competition date. It’s too hard of a cut when this isn’t a really important match, IMO. If there was money, fame, or this was the only way to be compliant with a diet then sure- I’d say cut to 170. But in this instance I’d just push back the competition.

Nice to see another BJJ player in the weight room, becoming more common! IMO cutting large amounts of weight for BJJ tournaments is silly. unless its Worlds or something on that level. At smaller tournaments they sometimes group multiple small divisions together to create one full division, making your weight cut pointless and for nothing. Id compete where you’re at and keep pushing in the weight room. I personally know how hard it is to gain weight with BJJ and lifting combined. I have to scratch and claw to keep my weight up and avoided injuries. good luck and keep us posted with your tournament outcome! We should start a sub group to share our programing and training sessions. OSS
