What is the deal with BCAA?

Hi Jordan,

Loving your stuff.
From reading reviews of the literature I have become persuaded, that there is not really a reason to take BCAA, if you are getting enough protein otherwise, for muscle gains or retention. Therefore I was surprised to see them in your supplements and hearing you recommend taking BCAA. Then I watched this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HnOlPij87E - No to BCAA for muscle retention, Yes to BCAA from fatigue and hydration standpoint) which cleared up a little bit of my confusion but leaves me with this question:

  • Can you elaborate why you recommend BCAAs before a workout and point me towards the zcience?

Thanks in advance
Andreas

Andy,

Yea there’s some data (not terribly strong) suggesting it reduces fatigue and can improve palatability for consuming liquids. That said, isolated BCAAs will no longer be in Peri Rx after this reformulation. They’re not harmful and some folks may benefit from them, but they aren’t good enough to keep including them as a general recommendation.

Ha! The new formulation will have EAAs in it, which include BCAAs. No need for anyone to get trampled on in the rush.

I hope I can shed some light in this brief video about BCAAS:
