As the title states, I’m curious what the point of doing ab exercises is. Specifically, whether they are worth doing for someone in my situation:
I’m currently pursuing other athletic endeavors (competitive mountain biking) so training with weights has taken a backseat. I’m way stronger than anyone else around me on a bike, and my time is much better spent developing myself aerobically (15-20 hrs/week), which is a huge limiter for me in comparison.
That being said, I’m also dieting for aesthetic reasons (beach & wedding season) so I’m mainly in the gym twice a week doing arm and back work in order to limit muscle loss in those areas.
I’m sure ab work (ab wheel, v-ups, etc.) in some way contributes to my overall wellbeing. But, life is short and I’d rather not spend 10 minutes of my day this summer doing something that doesn’t currently contribute to my immediate goals of looking shredded. And I don’t ever get the feeling that “core strength” is in any way a limiter for my on-the-bike performance.
Given my goals and priorities, is there any argument you could make for including those exercises? Can I get shredded without touching an ab wheel? Might seem ridiculous to think this much about 10 min on the ab wheel, but I am trying to pare my gym work to the bare minimum for the next few months because I have a lot going on in my life.
