Whey protein and acne in females - potentially an endocrinology issue as well

Good evening Jordan!

I apologise if this question ends up a bit long winded or overly complex but I really don’t know where else to turn to. I got my girlfriend into resistance training a few months ago. She changed her diet significantly, increased her protein intake and started supplementing with whey. Brand of choice was Optimum Gold.

For the past month or so she has been having serious and even painful acne outbreak on her face. We are now trying to narrow down what might be causing it and see if anything can be done. The trouble is, she was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries when she was in puberty and has been having hormone-related issues her whole adult life (her test is 2.3 nmol/L if that matters).

A few stats:

female, caucasian
age: 29 y.o.
weight: 63 kg
height: 176 cm
on birth control: since 15 y.o.
stopped birth control: mar 2019

The only reason she got off of birth control is, well, desire for a birth :). All was reasonably fine for a couple of months but around Christmas all hell broke loose. She’s been having acne outbreks on and off each week or so. Any ideas here?

I understand this might be well beyond an online forum but just a general direction will be greatly appreciated. Get off whey, supplement with something else, get off skyr cheese/yoghurt…?

Many thanks!
Alex

Alex,

I don’t think her protein is having anything to do with her acne. The PCOS and hormonal birth control changes are more likely to be implicated here. I don’t think I can see anything problematic from a dietary perspective based on what’s reported here.
