Which direction to go?

I figured this was more of a nutrition than training question. I’m 27, M, 5’11" and 178. I think on most strength boards I would be told I need to gain weight. I’ve got an odd body type. I have a pretty obvious double chin going on yet I have abs. I would love to gain weight and strength but I think that’s only going to make the double chin worse. Should I focus on staying around the same weight and being extremely disciplined with what I’m eating or should I be dropping some weight? I’m currently doing your 3 day hypertrophy program.

Tiger,

Not your best showing at the US Open last week, but I can forgive you because you were able to win the Master’s!

In any event, I can’t (and don’t) advise people to gain or lose weight based on their chin status, rather I’d want to know your waist circumference, health risk factors, and preferences. If you want to lose weight, that’s cool by me, though it’s unlikely to help with your strength improvements based on your current stats.

Thanks for the reply and recognizing my master’s win

I measured from the navel yesterday and weighed in. The waist is right at 36" and I’m at ~181 BW. I would ideally like to get up to 190 or above but wanted your thoughts now that you have my current waist measurement. After finishing up the hypertrophy program I have now transitioned to the HLM program. I aim to be more intentional with my diet and cutting out soda, junk foods and limiting alcohol. Before the hypertrophy program I was doing very little conditioning and now I’m hitting the GPP days. Would you recommend maintaining or gaining weight from here? Thanks

I would advise you to maintain your weight while training in order to reduce your waist circumference to <35" before considering it appropriate to gain weight.

Thanks should help with my club speed too

As I’ve been cutting the majority of junk out of my diet with the exception of my “bible study” meal with the guys each week I’ve noticed the scale is trending down ward. I’ve already lost a few pounds and the waist appears to be down 1/4-1/2 inch depending on when I measure. Is losing weight fine or would you recommend I try to up my calories and still maintain? I’m fine either way and I’m just committed to actually leaning out and looking better before I get back into the gain weight mind set.

I’d like to revisit this. I have one week left in the HLM program and then transitioning to something else. My July 1st waist measurement was 36" at a BW of 181. This measurement was not done first thing in the morning compared to subsequent measurements. I measured first thing in the morning August 1st and my waist measurement was 35 and a quarter. I measured on the 15th of August and my waist measurement was 34 and 3/4 inch from around the belly button. Looking in the mirror I appear pretty lean with visible abs and definition but stubborn fat under my chin and waist still persists. My weight has fallen to 177 while strength has been maintained. I know initially the recommendation was to maintain weight but as I’ve been more conscious about eating little junk I’ve lost weight anyway. Would it be advisable to continue to lose body weight? I think that’s probably the only way I could get rid of the stubborn areas or do you think maintaining would be useful? Thanks as always
