I have been using whey as a replacement for breakfast to help with weight loss, and it’s been successful with about 15 pounds lost since March. However the recent Consumer Reports article on lead contamination has got me rethinking whey in general.
My current whey source was sued a couple years ago for lead contamination. They have since change the formulation and are now “BRGCS AA+” and informed Choice certified. Are these comparable to GMP and Informed Sport used by Rx Whey?
Rx whey is about twice the cost, but I am heavily considering it.
A weird hypothetical question. A can of tube is 100 calories and 24 g of protein, with the same amount of BCAAs per 100 g as whey, all for a less $1 a can. Would the risk of mercury content or anything else make eating a can of tuna a day rather than taking whey a bad idea?
I would be curious to know what whey you’re using is half the price of our whey, as per our recent review, we are cheaper than nearly all competitors selling whey protein isolate.
That said, I am not familiar with BRCGS certification process, so I’m not sure how it stacks up to GMP accreditation. As far as Informed Choice vs Informed Sport, the difference has mostly to do with the frequency of the testing, where Informed Sport testing is done on every batch and Informed Choice is not. See here
A can of tuna yielding 24g of protein does not have the same amount of BCAAs in 100g of whey. 100g of whey yields ~ 5, 9, 5 grams of isoleucine, leucine, and valine, respectively. A can of tuna will have ~ about 2, 3, and 2g of each. I am not too worried about the mercury content of tuna, but it’s not really an apples to apples comparison protein wise per amount of energy.
I have been using My Protein Impact Whey Isolate. If you hit a 50% off sale it’s $107 for a 5 kg bag, 166 servings. Which comes out to 65¢ per serving.
But usually I am purchasing a 2.5 kg bag at 30-40% off. For 83 servings its 76¢ to $1.47.
But it’s of a lesser quality. As you stated, monthly testing of some batches, not of every batch. And one scoop contains 25g protein and 6g bcaa compared to 21 g and 6.5g bcaa. Also 110 calories vs 90 for Whey Rx. So it’s probably worth the switch to something slightly more expensive.
Regarding the tuna, I must have screwed up the math doing the conversions to 100 g servings.
Hi David, just wanted to point out that we normalize our price comparisons on (1) tub of our Whey Rx (30 servings) and don’t include any discount information just to keep things apples-to-apples.
When considering discounts, its important to note that BBM has discounts available always for larger purchases. When you buy two tubs, there’s an automatic 15% discount applied. As well, 3+ tubs yield everyday savings of 20%.
While we don’t have different “sizes”, the end result is the same in terms of the amount of product we’re providing for a price and this should be considered for a true comparison with others’ products.
I use MyProtein Isolate as well. If you normalize to 22g servings it’s 88c per serving.
The price is very competitive if you hit the sales, but it was also the only one I looked at that consistently tested at undetectable levels in almost all categories.
I haven’t looked at the products here in detail yet. But will when I need to buy again.
We do ship abroad for apparel. I’m not sure about supplements though off hand. Shoot us an email support@barbellmedicine.com and we can get you sorted.
@David_Oswald 10-4. I agree that sale price vs non-sale price is definitely a big difference, but I do think we’re competitive when comparing sale vs sale price (or quantity as Shawn mentioned).
I don’t see an issue with their protein per se’. I would have done a few things differently however, which is why we have our own version.
Due to inconsistency and volatility with international carriers in recent months, we are currently not shipping anything outside of the US, except to Canada and the UK. Even those destinations have posed challenges for us and our customers.
The situation is outside of our control and we hate having dissatisfied customers, so we’ll have this policy until things improve internationally. Meanwhile, Supplements are always only shipped within the US. The only exception is that we do ship to APO/FBO because they are technically handled as a domestic address for us.
We do not publish these results at this time. That said, our standing with Informed Sport is contingent on each batch passing and the facility being GMP accredited.
