ACL Tear - Non Surgical Rehab

Hi, a couple weeks ago I tore my ACL playing basketball (it was a random pickup game and I hadn’t played in years lol). Had an Xray and MRI which had the impression of “High Grade Partial/Complete Tear of the ACL.”

Since there were no other injuries (i.e. a torn meniscus) my orthopedic surgeon suggested I try the non operative route. I don’t plan on really playing pivot sports like basketball or football in the future, but I do have plans on competing in powerlifting and bodybuilding eventually. Just wanted to see if anyone has had experience competing in these fields with a torn ACL without going the surgery route.

For context with my recovery at the moment, 2 weeks from the injury I have a minimal limp and can perform bodyweight squats below parallel. I’ve also been able to consistently train my upper body with machines at the same intensity pre-injury.

Just wanted to hear if you guys have had personal or coaching experience with someone in similar circumstances. Thanks a bunch!

We do have experience with this issue, in particular Dr. Miles; however, discussing details as they pertain to your individual situation would be best addressed via an individual consultation.

Hey! First of all, sorry to hear about your injury. It’s great that you’re already making progress in recovery!

When it comes to powerlifting or bodybuilding with a torn ACL, it’s definitely possible, but you’ll want to focus on strengthening the muscles around your knee. As a Vitality Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I would suggest that building up your quads, hamstrings, and glutes can provide extra support. Just be cautious with heavy lifts that might strain the knee, and working with a physical therapist can help you train safely. Listen to your body, take it slow, and best of luck with your recovery!
