I’m a 25 year old female, exercising (weightlifting) for 5 years, powerlifting for 1 with mostly moderate hip snapping and pain in both hips that i’ve been dealing with since I was 16 (constant). My right one has always been the worst and Interior rotation causes it to “snap” which is painful, especially after high fatigue weeks, radiates down to knee, exterior part of shin and down to the ankle. My gait has changed to where my right foot now points outwards and it hurts after a long day of walking or intense training session. Previously there was no pain during lifting, only after on the right, outer side of the hip. Lately it’s progressed to pain during the squat, upper part of the movement right after parallel. Xrays and MRI says there are no tears or trauma. Eccentric supine leg lifts and hanging the leg off the bed relieve the pain temporarily but I would like to treat it for good. I’m looking for advice in how best to handle it, as all I’ve gotten from the physical therapist is recommendations of glute medius strengthening, hip flexor stretching and “taking it easy”. Thank you in advance!!
Hey @armoredgirl , it’s difficult to give individualistic advice without a consultation.
However, what has training looked like recently?
Initial advice would be to find tolerable loading to the area where you aren’t having a dramatic increase in symptoms during or after training.
If you adjust loading to the area but a particular range of motion still isn’t improving, then alter range of motion. Finally, if that isn’t working then perhaps we sub in different exercises for a period of time. Check out this video by Dr. Baraki: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdwj5ORPmX0
