Almost prediabetic, need to take action?

Hi there,

My FBS is currently at 5.02 mmol/L, and HbA1C at 5.1%. I tested my FBS again last month, and it was 5.46 mmol/L.

Last month, my waist circumference was 93cm, now it’s 89 because I lost 2kg of weight. My height is 190cm and weight currently fluctuating between 80-81kg.

I also checked my cholesterol to see if my diet is good, my Total Cholesterol is 4.71 mmol/L, HDL 1.71 mmol/L, Calculated LDL 2.82 mmol/L, and Triglycerides 0.89 mmol/L.

My diet is high in veggies, legumes, nuts, and low in saturated fat. The most fat I get from animal products are eggs I eat in the morning.

I do the beginner template 3x per week, cycling in zone 2 for 30-45 mins other days. Or else I’ll do some bodyweight cardio at home.

So, I’m not prediabetic according to the results, but does it seem like it’s too close to the limit? If so, is there anything more I can do lifestyle wise, or should I go for medication?

I’ve also tried losing more weight but it’s proving to be too challenging because it’s affecting my sleep and productivity at work. I could try harder if it’s absolutely necessary to reduce my risk of developing diabetes. Most I could do is another 4 weeks of cutting but not sure if it’s going to rebound because I always get super hungry and insomnia whenever I get below 80kg.

Based on the information you’ve provided, I would not pursue medication to manage your glucose levels at this time, nor do I think you need to be aggressively cutting in the short term.

If you feel you have some excess body fat to lose, that can be done at a pace that you tolerate better. Otherwise, I would encourage you to continue meeting the lifestyle guidelines we have set out here: Where should my priorities be to improve my health?

Beyond this, further individualized guidance relating to your medical tests & treatments would be best handled via a consultation, which we’d be happy to help with if needed.
