Another Pull Up Question

Good evening,

I’m close to finishing block 1 of the beginner template after a 6 month layoff. Prior to the layoff, I had completed the full beginner template and PB1.

I was reading the Forums, and saw Jordan respond "That said, I do think most people who train should be able to do some pull ups.

In any case, I am more than happy for you to train them and think doing multiple sets of 1-2 in the GPP slot would be appropriate for now. Later, training them more similarly to a main lift might be useful." in response to incorporating pull ups into training.

I would love to get better at pull-ups. For block 2 of the beginner template, upper back GPP is not programmed by time, instead by sets and reps, which I can’t complete 2 sets of 8 to 15 pulls ups. Would it be appropriate to multiple sets of 1 to 2 rep sets, or whatever I can do at the prescribed RPE, in 7 minutes as described above, or should I wait until block 3, where upper backwork is actually programmed as a function of time.

Lastly, for future reference, how would one go about training pull-ups similarly to a main lift as mentioned above? I’m guessing it would involve maybe training pull-ups in the row slot of one of the templates?

Thanks,

Matte,

Yea, you could program the upper back like that in the beginner template if you wanted. Should work fine. In the future, yes, training the pull-up or vertical pull using similar programming to the main lifts (squat, bench, deadlift in many templates) would be a viable way to improve pull-up/chin-up strength.
