I tested positive for COVID early in March 2021. It was fortunately a very mild case where my only symptoms were respiratory cold symptoms like a sore throat as well as loss of taste and smell. Within two weeks, I tested negative, and I started to slowly be able to slightly taste things again.
So I had thought I got super lucky and my sense of taste and smell fully recovered. But now it’s apparent that while sometimes I can taste a food or meal from start to finish, most other times I can only taste it for the first few bites and then the taste fades much weaker, or goes away completely. I tried having chocolate cheesecake a few days ago and it didn’t taste as rich as I remembered. Often I start eating something being able to taste it but then not tasting it by the end. Just today, I almost can’t taste anything. I had thought a few weeks ago that my sense of taste fully recovered because it seemed like I could fully taste everything for several days straight there.
Anyone experience similar taste “coming in and out”, or have any clue about if the scientific and medical communities have looked/are looking into this? Any intuition or idea about how individuals recover taste (and smell, but I mostly care about taste lol) after COVID?
