Training after covid infection

Hi guys,

Whats the current data and/or recommendation on training after a covid infection? I tested positive two weeks ago on tuesday and missed one session in total (did some easy stuff at home). Symptoms were mild and it probably helped that I had 1 of 2 pfizer shots already. I have been back in the gym since last thursday and training has been kinda hard. I did 3 sets of 5 @ 8 for comp squats, close grip bench @ 9 and rack pulls @ 8 and had to readjust the weight multiple times because I was pretty weak. For the next two days I was insanely sore (doms) and was not able to do pause squats beyond the empty bar. I transitioned into The Bridge after SSLP and the first low stress week of the program was fine.

My question: is a Covid infection special in a way that it really fucks with your recovery or gets you ‘detrained’ faster? I have been free of symptoms since I picked up training again and feel fine in the gym, but it seems like my doms is much worse than normal. 3 sets of 5 aren’t really a completely ‘new’ stimulus either. Im also slightly weaker, I think.

Thanks,

Daniël

It is not special with respect to impacts on training.

I would approach this similar to a “rehab” phase, or a return to the gym after some time off. Accept where you’re at, and train accordingly.

Thanks Austin!

Anecdotally, I caught it and it killed my energy levels for approximately 6 months after recovering. I had a friend who caught it and didn’t notice any major detriments when he came back to the gym. As Dr. Baraki said, just feel where you are because this disease is so varied in its symptoms.

Yes, my energy levels are also way down. About 3 weeks after my first symptoms now. How did your training go these 6 months? When did you get back to around PR-levels?

And yep. Gonna go from week to week. Just want to keep some intensity in to not lose all the strength.
