Hope you don’t mind this is a re-post from 02/08/19, that went unanswered.
My Dad has been diagnosed with mild arthritis in his left knee. He is 59 years old, has a history of being a keen runner (marathons), likes to lift weights, but only upper body work (bench and dumbbells mainly)
He is not overweight, eats a healthy diet, doesn’t smoke, probably likes beer a little too much though.
Has pain after a run and also after being in the car.
Arthritis diagnosed with X-ray.
Doctor told him to use cycle or rowing machines to help the knee. Told to stop running.
I personally think that it’s time he learned to Squat and Deadlift to help reverse his condition.
A few weeks of learning and then a go at the Bridge might be good.
Do you mind if I ask your advice for him? Is the the Knee Template appropriate for this condition?
Hey @Mark_Oli , apologies for missing the thread the first go around.
We’d likely need a consult to give your Dad individualistic advice. With that said, there is likely no reason he needs to stop running but rather manage the volume and intensity of running he is completing. The process can’t necessarily be reversed but actually doesn’t need to be given we can have presence of OA in asymptomatic populations (no pain and no dysfunction). I would advocate for resistance training in his situation given the benefits we see with such exercise in the endurance athlete population. I wouldn’t recommend the knee rehab template if he has not been training previously. The amount of volume would likely be a large overshoot from what he has previously adapted to.
