Average Daily Fiber Good Enough?

I’m trying to lose weight right now and what has been working for me is to skip breakfast, have a couple servings of fruit and a protein shake before working out, lunch after that, and dinner in the evening. In addition to the couple pieces of fruit there is usually some servings of vegetables in both my lunch and dinner. This only gets me to about half the daily recommended fiber goal, if I don’t eat pulses.

I absolutely loves pulses, if it were up to me I would be eating them at ever meal. But my wife does most of the meal planning and cooking, and I eat leftovers for lunch.

When pulses are in the meal, I easily am eating about 50% over the fiber goal. In a given week my average Daily fiber intake is probably about the daily goal. But not every day.

Is this good enough?

I don’t have a problem with it and it’s likely fine. However, my general view on fiber intake is that the more people can get from whole foods per day on average, the better. I suspect your weight loss efforts and health would likely be better if you consumed more fiber on average, though whether or not these benefits (likely small) are worth it to you is more of a personal decision.

Just my 0.02.

Do you have any podcasts on fiber? Related to this post, I’m wondering about the risks [edit: and any quantifiers, even though that’s not really possible] for those who can’t or don’t get the recommended amount but still get maybe 25g or so a day. Other than the obvious digestive motility.

Yes, I believe it’s episode 109. Just searched, yep it’s 109:

We also have our article here:

There are lots of health risks associated with eating a high fiber diet. It’s not solely due to the fiber, as high-fiber foods displace other, less healthy foods in a diet, people who eat more fiber engage in other healthy behaviors, and so on. Still, much more than just gut related things here.
