Bent knee back extensions - thrust or hinge?

to be clear the knee bend would be pretty significant, something like 3:00 in this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJqinIy1AfM

I want to substitute some of these in for some of my RDLs or hip thrusts. Would it make more sense to think of them as replacements for a hinge type of pattern or a thrust type of pattern?

If it will not matter which type of movement pattern I count them as, is this because it would make more sense to evaluate things in terms of total glute volume, or because they don’t fit well enough into either category?

Thanks!

I don’t know that there’s a hinge vs thrust pattern outside of people who made up the terms and I don’t think it matters where you categorize them. That said, I don’t think these things are more useful than RDL’s, squats, lunges, hip thrusts, or GHR’s.

They probably function best as a low fatigue accessory exercise with limited applicability.

What makes it relegated to ‘accessory’ or low applicability compared to GHRs or back extensions? I suppose it just seems like it could be loaded pretty heavy over time, if you had the right equipment. Decent RoM. What’s wrong with em?

I’d view them the same as back extensions and GHR’s, all accessory movements, which is just an arbitrary distinction.

I don’t think you can load them that heavy compared to barbell work and the ROM isn’t very long. That said, if you want to do them…that’s fine too.

They would not be on my short list for exercise selection, and I think that ascribing any unique effect to this exercise is in error.

Thanks, Jordan.
