Blood glucose test a good indicator of carb tolerance?

hey there,

In Robb Wolf’s book “Wired to Eat,” there is a 30 day test period he recommends where you test your blood glucose after eating a single carb source of 50g effective carbs. Fasted and testing 2 hours later and seeing how you respond. If it is above some number (can’t recall the specifics) then you deem that carb source as something you don’t tolerate well.

Something seems fishy about this. Is this a fair way to indicate carb tolerance in an individual? Is having an above average blood glucose response to a carb source even something to care about?

Thank you.

I don’t know the specifics of his testing protocol, but it’s not the standard oral glucose tolerance test (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: Uses, Preparing, & More) and there are many factors that influence the results of an oral glucose tolerance test that have nothing to do with insulin resistance.

That said, I suppose if your blood glucose was very high (>200ng/dL) 2 hours post prandial then you’d likely have good evidence you’re a diabetic (high specificity), but other values don’t really tell you anything about your “carb tolerance”.
