what’s the bbm teams thoughts on blood restriction training ? Safe for the avg individual ? I’m looking at it as way to increase arm size while training for other goals .
It is thought to work by inducing metabolic stress while performing reps at light weights, which results in additional motor unit recruitment such that you achieve full MU recruitment sooner than you would without the BFR.
We don’t think it’s all that useful.
May I ask why do you think it is not that useful?
Most researches in this area give positive result more or less, though many of those papers were written by same group of people. It is safe in general, and does not add much extra work, if it can give few extra millimeters gainZzz, why not
Thanks for the response , is it relatively safe for the avg person ( no medical training ) to try ?
I explained why I don’t think it’s that useful in the reply I posted above. Based on more recent evidence, I’m not as convinced that metabolic stress directly mediates the hypertrophic benefit observed in these studies.
And I don’t think it’s especially dangerous, no.
If I remember correctly, I read a post on the SS forum about a year or so ago. It was by one of the guys involved in some of the early studies for the military. The technique was targeted towards soldiers returning from combat with injuries requiring rehabilitation. It was not intended for a healthy individual. It doesn’t surprise me that people have extrapolated this information to perfectly healthy individuals.
Well, many research of blood flow restriction training were performed on ‘perfectly healthy individuals’, either trained or untrained. It’s useful for rehabilitation, but that does not imply it does nothing to regular dudes. On the contrary, hypertrophy-wise, majority of them showed promising result to some extend. The mechanisms aren’t very clear, but gainZzz are real
Sorry, I’m not quite understanding your comment. Are you saying that it showed no benefit for healthy individuals, or are you saying that there have not been any studies on healthy individuals?
I apologize for my English.
I was saying there were many research on healthy individuals, there were few systematic review on this topic, and majority of them showed rather good result.
It can be used as rehabilitation tool for sure, but for normal dudes, it can be a useful variation as well. Like Brad Scheonfeld suggested it can be used as a finishing technique for isolation work.
Bottom line is, it can be useful, like floor press, but not everyone have to use it
