I initially noticed the pain in the hypothenar eminance area when on the bike a week and a half ago, and noticed it affecting my pressing overhead (and likely bench) the past couple of sessions – avoiding putting the bar in the proper area in my left hand. I have an annual exam with my doc on Monday so was planning to ask him, but figured I’d like to hear an opinion here as well as to how to go about dealing with this. Pop vitamin I and get some wrist straps?
How do you know it’s a “bone bruise”?
I’d experiment with grip styles, and wrist wraps are certainly reasonable to try (though I have no idea whether they’ll help).
Thanks for the reply, I just noticed it. As far as bone bruise it was seeming to hang around forever and was similar to one i’d had when I was younger. At any rate, I ended up re-reading the SS Press section and found my grip issue; it was moving more onto that hypothenar eminance rather than staying down into the crease. Shortly after posting this I had a bench session with my now “fixed” grip and had no issues – actually pressed much more smoothly and more controlled.
Pressing overhead is a little bit more challenging (probably too much bad form ingrained) but managed to snag some wrist straps and those did help a lot. Mainly focused on keeping the wrists from rolling back and getting into a compromising position.
Thanks for your time!
