I fractured(small fracture with small angulation) my 5th metacarpal bone on left hand 4 weeks ago. Doctor (Orthopedic) put my hand in cast for 3 weeks. When my cast was removed my hand was very stiff so i start doing flexibility exercises. Couple of days ago i start doing deadlifts with small weights. Today i lift 30%(70kg) of my max with almost no pain but the doctor told me not to lift heavy(for him that was heavy) for 8 more weeks because i can reinjure my hand.
Should i continue lifting weights i don’t feel pain with or should i stop and do only flexibility exercises like he advised me.
Can i really reinjure my hand from doing deadlifts with moderate weights at this stage of my injury.
@Chulevski - thanks for the questions. Difficult to give individual advice in this scenario without consulting with you. There is a concern to allow adequate healing for the fractured area without over-stressing. Personally, if it were me, I’d start low and slowly increase loading stress in the weeks to come. What this means for the deadlift, I would perform to tolerance with higher than usual repetitions (12 - 15) with tempo and lower RPE (say 6-7).
