Lifting with broken bones

Hey guys, so I have a small fracture in the base of the second and third metacarpal bones. One doctor said I should wear a cast but I can do most unloaded normal life movements with no problem. Another doctor said no cast (given that I’m a powerlifter and very active) but just load what doesnt hurt.

I don’t really trust doctors who don’t lift on lifting things tbh. Today I benched 70 kg’s with the bar very very low on my palm with minimal to no pain (my max is 160 kg). Can I keep loading the bench like this as long as it doesn’t hurt?

I’m 24 years old by the way. Healthy, normal. 105 kgs.

I know it’s hard to give a suggestion without being my personal doctor, but just an opinion on this will help a lot. Basically if loading without pain would be okay during this rehab. Thanks!

Hey MatiEsquenet - unfortunately we can’t weigh in on this without more information garnered from a consult with you.

Totally get it. Can you tell me if there’s a relationship between less pain and “having the green light” to keep loading a movement? Example, I benched 10 kg more this week with less pain, would it theoretically be okay to go up another 10 kg next week? Meaning, is lower pain a correlation with the fact that I may be healing and able to load more?

Just in theory. I’m clear in the fact that you’re not recommending anything to me directly without a consult. Thank you Micheal!

There is not a good correlation in this instance between less pain and “having the green light.” With hand fractures I would recommend staying on the conservative side of things until good callus formation is seen.
