Can creatine suppelementation increase uric acid levels significantly?

Hi guys -

I was curious to your opinion on creatinine supplementation as it pertains to hyperuricemia…

I know that the paper is not discussing directly gout, however there did seem to be an increase in plasma uric acid concentrations. I occasionally do have gout flares, and will take colchicine when this happens. I had been supplementing creatine just on training days and recently increased to daily supplementation (4 g per day). I got a gout flare within a few days of daily supplementation. I know that hyperuricemia can be affected by purine intake and other factors. I was just curious if this could potentially play a role in the issue as well. And, if so, should I decrease my daily dose of creatine, or just supplement on my training days (I use the Peri-Rx on training days)?

Thanks

Andrew

AJ,

Thanks for the link and the post. AFAIK, exercise has been shown to both lower uric acid production(in obese folks) and raise it’s excretion slightly, transiently, in hard-training folks- though there are many inputs that could be confounders.

That said, I wouldn’t recommend high-dose creatine supplementation in anyone with gout, as I don’t think the benefits outweigh the risks.

Thank you so much for the reply. I am currently running the Bridge 1.0 again. Prior to this I did the GPP endurance template twice through. After this I’m considering the Hypertrophy template as I still need to shed around 20 so pounds I’m avoiding hopping to the strength template. Currently weigh 245, 6 ft. Waist is 41 in.

Numbers right now are:
Squat 335 x 5
Deadlift 335 x 5
OHP 155 x 5
Bench 255 x 5

My numbers were much higher after second run through the bridge (I had hit 375x5 and 400 x 1 on my squat, deadlift was 360x5 and 375 x 1). Drop off was due to neglecting weight training for a couple of months.

Does this sound like a valid plan to go with hypertrophy? Also I understand losing that weight will also help with the gout flares. When I started LP 1.5 years ago was 225 and have stayed around 240-245 since then. I do great on my eating for werks then I’ll have a run where I get a little stupid and eat a lot at night. Would consulting with you on my nutrition be beneficial to me?

Thanks

AJ,

Yea I think the hypertrophy template would be reasonable here.

As far as nutrition guidance, I do think that having the accountability and professional oversight is likely to improve outcomes here, though if you were able to maintain compliance on your own I’m not sure how much we’d be adding to the equation.
