Can you run LP too long?

Brief back story, 38 years old and messed around on and off with fitness for the last 10 years or so. I did some swim/bike/run, crossfit, and 2 brief LP programs using the Greyskull LP with no real fitness activity for the last 1-2 years.

In May of 17 I started another run at LP. I started with the Greyskull LP again, but converted to a slightly modified SSLP. The only change I made to the SSLP was that I only squatted Monday and Friday. In late Oct I was squatting 350 lbs for my sets when tweaked my back. 345 the previously went ok and I hit all my reps for the 3 sets. Even though i was hitting all my sets it was a real grind. If I hadn’t tweaked my back I feel I had another 3-4 workouts until I stalled. Once I had got into the low 300s recovery started kicking my butt and I often went 5 days between squat sessions. My legs were always sore, not just a little ache, but legitimately hurt. While it didn’t seem normal, the weight kept going up so I kept on with the program. After a couple month break I started back at reduced weight and again have a fair amount of soreness past 315 pounds. Hurt my back again at 330.

On the NSAIDs podcast Dr. Baraki made a comment about evaluating a program if it is causing DOMS. Would it be reasonable for me to switch to an intermediate style of programing even though I am still seeing progress on LP. I’m thrilled with my LP results, just gets old being sore everyday. I will also be looking into an affordable way to find someone to coach my squat to try and figure out my back pain issue. While I would love to do the online coaching offered by SS, they don’t pay Firefighters that much around here.

The low training frequency may be playing a role in your soreness. The two arguments would be that if you’re seeing progress and are satisfied with it, to carry on – but if you are starting to dread going into the gym to train because of your pain and soreness, a change in programming is reasonable, yes. I’d suggest increasing your squat frequency, though I don’t have the full context of your training to give you specific recommendations here.

And, to answer the question in the title of the thread – yes, absolutely, people can and do run the LP too long. Happens all the time.

Simplicity is seductive, as it were.

Is 8 years too long? Have I been lifting longer than you? I had to wait for you to catch up and show me the way into intermediate training
