Change programs and sleeping issue

Hi all.

Since this is my first post, I’ll take a moment to introduce myself. I’m almost 28, male, work in finance (sitting 10 hours a day) and live in Spain. I’m also a scientific method believer, to the point in which friends and family sometimes don’t want to talk with me :). This is why I’m really thankful that I found you (thanks Alan Thrall), you guys were just what I needed to find motivation in training again.

So:
Height: 175 cm
Weight: 76 kg
Waist: 89 cm

Now to my background, I started wasting time in the gym when I was 21, just for trying to look good in the beach and I did so until late 25s. I did mostly dumbells and machines, never deadlifted, never squated. Then I found Alan and I didn’t care so much about my abds anymore, and started doing stronglifts and then madcow then freestyled for about a year and a half (yeah I know I probably wasted this time too). At the time I thought I was making progress, my best numbers when I quit were:

SQUAT: 125KG X 2 REPS
BENCH: 107.5 KG X 2 REPS
DEADLIFT: 152.5 KG X 2 REPS
PRESS: 65 KG X 2 REPS

Then because of work and life I quit training for almost a year, and since the begginning of August I’m back. I started doing starting strength because I started watching your oldest videos and you guys used to recommend it for getting back to training after a long period of time, know in the most recent ones I’m not sure if I’ll be better doing the bridge or something else. I’m currently making 5kg a day in each lift with SS. And I’m still 30~40 KG away from my best in each lift. Should I change program? My goals are getting stronger and healthier, don’t care as much about the beach anymore.

And the second question that I have, which is the one that concerned me the most is about sleeping. Before going back to training, I use to sleep from 11.00 pm to 6.30 am every day like a baby. Since I got back to the gim I’m having real troubles falling sleep, many times achieving it way after midnight. My work stress is the same, my diet variety is the same although I eat more quantity, and the only thing that is new is that I take a whey protein shake after workout (around 7.30 pm) and creatine monohydrate preworkout (5.00 pm). They are cheap quality supplements just as you recommend, without caffeine or any stimulant. I can’t really explain this, I don’t feel particularly tired or anything but I’d like to get back to my sleeping schedule. Any thoughts on this?

Also as far as nutrition goes I’m not tracking my macros yet, I eat 5 times a day, try to eat healthy and with a good protein dosis each meal.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Julian

Hey Julian,

Hope you’re well and thanks for joining us. As far as your questions:

  1. I think you can continue on your current program.

  2. It’s well described that in a certain cohort of people who train near bed time take longer to fall asleep than others. Since you don’t feel tired…not sure if this warrants further discussion
