In the description for your Hypertrophy program you recommend it for those looking to shed excess body fat, but in a recent YouTube video you said you’re unlikely to grow muscle without eating in a surplus (unless I’m mistaken, in which case I apologize). These seem like contradictions to me but I’d love to be corrected!
I have about 20 more pounds to lose in my weight loss journey (already lost 30) and I’m moving from the beginner program to the hypertrophy program, since I’d like to not focus on strength for a bit and instead focus on muscle growth. I’m worried this is a fools errand while trying to lose weight. I’m not entirely a novice lifter but I did take time off due to covid hence why I ran the beginner’s program.
Thank you in advance for clarifying this and for being an incredible resource. I can honestly say BBM has changed my life in numerous positive ways.
The text for the hypertrophy program suggests it may be useful for those trying to lose weight as the additional training volume, reduced intensity, less focus on strength, and additional conditioning are well-suited for that.
As far as growing muscle, you can grow some on a deficit, but you’ll grow more in a surplus.
I think the hypertrophy or powerbuilding program would be great for you.
Thanks for the kind words as well. It means a lot!
Thank you for the response! I built back up to pretty decent numbers (within 5% to 10% of my previous PRs) thanks to the beginner program, however I suppose my concern is throughout all my training I never really look as though I’m a lifter. I’m pretty happy with my strength, but I’ve never been happy with my body composition. I’m worried I’ll lose the weight and still look as if I’m a non lifter, but it’s nice to know I can still increase my size on a deficit.
