Constant Foot Pain

Hello Dr.’s,

I currently work as a transporter inside a hospital, and our job is mainly to take patients to their various tests and discharge them.

This involves a lot of walking and usually pushing a hospital bed. Since working here, I’ve developed a constant pain from the base of my toe to my heel. The pain is very pronounced in the morning upon getting up and going, and the base of my toe is sensitive to rubbing. At first I thought it was a muscle soreness that I would adapt to but now it appears chronic (4 months+).

No one else seems to have the pain so I’m thinking it must have something to do with my shoes. Any recommendations here?

Some basic info about myself (feel free to ask more):
Age: 25
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 192
BodyFat%: ~15

Thanks,
Dylan

Dylan,
What does your current training look like? This sounds more indicative first hand of plantar fasciopathy type symptoms. Typically, and I know this likely comes as no surprise, the treatment is some focal strength training. The evidence would recommend working on slow calf raises in bare feet with a balled up towel under your toes. The towel essentially serves to place more tension on the plantar structures and assist with loading. You likely do not need to spend the money on a fancy piece of foam but the set up from this site should give you a better understanding of how to rig up the towel.

Interesting! Should be no problem incorporating that into my training , though I’ll have to do them at home so as to not ruin my reputation having people think I give a shit about my calves!

I recently just started training under BBM group programming. Before then I was running BBM temples (12 week strength most recently).

I had plantar fasciitis a while ago; I don’t know if that is exactly what is happening here, but I thought I’d share my experience anyway: two months of physical therapy did nothing to improve it, but it finally went away after over a year when I started to wear comfortable shoes more often (Nike Free Run etc.) and stretching my calves 2-3x a day for at least 30 seconds.

I’m going through a similar experience myself. I’m 32, started with foot pain in the middle of my arch after an overuse injury, and now it’s spread throughout my entire arch and metatarsals. It only occurs when I started walking., I had MRIs, neurologists, X-rays, etc., and nothing seems to have worked.

I’ve recently started a more intense physical therapy routine. I’m only on week 2 so far, so I have no idea if it’s going to help. My condition is in both feet so it’s a little different it sounds.

Our approach likely would not be much different if for bilateral symptoms.
