DOMS from Supplemental Exercises

Dear BBM Crew,

I am on week 5 of the 3 day GPP Hypertrophy Template and on Wednesday did Stiff-Legged Deadlifts for the first time, after which I noticed a significant amount of DOMS in my hamstrings. My GPP Thursday included HITT (I did sled pushes instead of sprints), and this morning my RPE 8 single Deadlift did not go as planned. I was expecting to lift 390 for a single and only managed 350, while last week I lifted 332 for 6 x 2 sets. Now, I figure that the DOMS following the Stiff-Legged Deadlifts will be reduced or be non-existent as I adapt to it over the next couple weeks. I’m just wondering if it’s normal in your experience when introducing new supplemental lifts for trainees to experience this kind of performance drop due to DOMS.

Thanks,
Jeremiah

I wouldn’t say that it is normal but I also wouldn’t say that it is something to be concerned about over the long-term. I’ve seen it happen more than a few times. Autoregulate, follow the program, and everything should be fine in the end.
