DOMS-like symptoms

Hey BBM,

Been a while since I last posted, I hope you’re all well. Congrats on the 300th podcast episode, amazing stuff, keep it up!

Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing some odd symptoms which I though were DOMS but have been lasting for over 3 days now and are quite debilitating.

I did a workout last Saturday (week 5, day 3, strength I) and despite managing RPE on the lifts I felt extremely tired and ultimately rated the session a 9 (felt super tired when I got home and slightly feverish). The following days I started getting what I thought was DOMS mostly on my forearms, biceps, triceps, chest (but almost felt like at bone-level, not sure how to describe this). I’ve never had DOMS in those areas and it is actually quite painful/debilitating, e.g. I have very little grip strength and it’s hard to play guitar or even type on a keyboard TBH.

I went working out yesterday and managed to do squats at least though I definitely was not feeling 100%, but I could barely bench so I called it a day. It’s been more than 3 days since the Saturday workout and honestly the symptoms have not been improving. Any thoughts on what this may be? I think I might have to get in touch with my doctor soon.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Matteo

Unfortunately it’s hard to say what this could be via the forum, based on this limited amount of information. This does sound unusual, especially for someone who has previously been able to tolerate such training without any issues. If the symptoms are not improving (or certainly if they’re worsening), seeking consultation with your physician or setting something up with our team would be appropriate next steps.

Hey Dr. Baraki,

Thank you for getting back to me on this.

Yeah so I got in touch with my doctor who says it’s acute myalgia (he did not see me in person). He says to rest until the muscles recover and drink plenty of water.

Not sure how this happened to be honest. Like I said, I was tired on that day, and am pretty tired in general (sleep quality isn’t great with two kids < 4 yrs old) and it’s getting pretty hot here so that might be part of the reason.

Anyway, good news is I’m feeling progressively better, still kinda weak but better. So I guess I’ll just wait until I feel good again (hopefully a couple of days) and get back to it!

Thanks again,
Matteo
