Dr. Baraki food intake tracking?

Thanks for the new forum - I’m excited for this resource! In the last Barbell Medicine podcast you mentioned something about Dr. Baraki weighing himself at night to make sure he had eaten enough for the day. Can you elaborate a bit on how that works, and why someone might choose that approach instead of tracking macros?

I weigh myself routinely (near-daily, sometimes both AM & PM) to ensure my weight is maintained within a target range of +/- 1-2 lbs. If I’m trying to gain weight, I just try to make sure the average weekly trend is going upwards. I make sure to consume plenty of protein & carbs, don’t go out of my way to add extra fats to my foods, and have developed a “feel” for how much to take in to fuel training and recovery.

It’s a simpler strategy for me to manage things alongside everything else I have going on, and works better for weight gain where I just need to ensure I’m in a reasonable caloric surplus. One could make the argument that it’s taken me longer than it should have to gain the weight I have, and therefore weighing/measuring and tracking macros may have been a better strategy for that reason. In contrast, if I was specifically planning to cut, I’d likely plan to track the data more diligently.

Regardless of what strategy you use, some form of regular self-monitoring that provides useful data to guide decision making is an essential component for success.

Awesome, thanks for the quick response! I’m currently weighing every morning and tracking macros, and trying to gain weight steadily. I’m just always on the lookout for other things to try.

For someone that normally eats the same thing every day would you recommend them this be an effective way of managing diet vs counting/tracking ? ( obviously maybe slower method but still an effective one)
