I am currently following the hypertrophy II template. The cardio recommendation is 35 min of LISS and 20 minutes of interval training. According to the exercise guidelines for adults, isn’t this not enough aerobic work? Of course the resistance training guidelines of two days per week are met. Should I being additional days of cardio if I want to meet the guidelines?
If this is the only activity you do in a week then no, it is not going to fulfill the recommended physical activity guidelines- it gets you about halfway there. As far as if you should be adding more formal conditioning volume, it depends how active you are otherwise. Are you getting ~ 20 minutes+ of physical activity per day? If so, you’re probably good. If not, I’d recommend adding more.
To clarify, what exactly do to you mean by 20 minutes+ of physical activity per day? According to my phone, I average about 6,000 steps a day, does this count as 20 minutes of activity? Would my daily steps plus the two GPP conditioning sessions meet the recommended physical activity guidelines?
I ran the beginner program and recently finished hypertrophy 1. I am now running strength 1, was thinking of adding an additional GPP day to get some extra conditioning. Is there any reason you would argue against this?
Thanks for help, I really enjoy the programming and information.
We don’t have strict definitions for this, as they are unnecessary and we don’t want to be too regimented about this and discourage people from just being more active in general.
That said, 6000 steps per day probably checks this box, as a normal pace is 100 steps per min. 6000 steps per day = 60 min of activity at ~ 4-5 METs. Per week, this is 420 min and 2100 MET-Minutes. This exceeds the physical activity guidelines minimums
