Hello this is an inquiry for my father, and yes he is fine with me contacting you guys about this.
Basic info: 5’ 6", 200-210 lbs, low activity level
For several months has had a tingling sensation going from his left glute down his left leg. Recently it has evolved into significant pain and discomfort.
So this week he saw a chiropractor who took an x-ray. Said my father’s spine was compressed to where the bones were nearly touching, in multiple places and my dad who saw the x-ray agreed it was pretty obvious. The chiropractor asked about my dad’s activity and exercise levels to which my dad replied he’s done little as of late but was on and off with a basic 2 day lifting and 2 day cardio program I made for him. The chiropractor then informed him that he should not squat nor deadlift at all. Also I should note that when he was lifting twice a week, he did not report any pain that was unbearable and he was responsible enough to change his weights based on RPE.
To me than seems like unsolicited fear mongering of 2 lifts that are useful for strengthening the back. Obviously I’m no where near as educated as you so my question is what should my father do? He is having a follow-up appointment and is going to try to obtain a picture of the x-ray. Along with the addition of that, is there any other information I should try to provide for you guy?
Hey @Lonely_Wolf - sorry to hear about this issue with your father. We’d need a consult to give individualistic advice. With that said, did the clinician explain why he shouldn’t complete these exercises?
Regarding symptoms - a flare-up in pain doesn’t give me much concern in these scenarios. However, if he was having progressively worsening neurological symptoms - this is a different discussion.
