Gents,
You’ve written previously that HLM is more of a “medium” stress on each day given that it’s not reasonable to predict when a heavy/medium/light day can be applied. However the exercise variations appear to do this and you have stated on the programming podcasts on YouTube that you are managing fatigue with use of variations. Is it the case that given appropriate weekly volume, the amount of fatigue present on any given day shouldn’t be a limiting factor?
Best,
Stuart

I’m not sure I understand the question.
If you’re asking whether you should be “fully recovered” every time you train (especially as a post-novice lifter), the answer is no.
I listened to the podcasts again and realise that we are constantly in an SRA cycle and discrete loading events are a misnomer. Suppose then thay my performance then stalls or regresses week to week through one of the templates. How do I tell whether this is from too much stress or too little, especially if my perceptions of fatigue e.g. from aches and pains may be unreliable?
That our perceptions of fatigue are not perfectly reliable does not make them completely useless in these decisions. I would account for those things, as well as looking at the context of the program (how much are we actually asking you to do? is it far outside the “typical” range we see most people using / responding to?), the context of your life and associated stressors, and do some experimenting to figure out the direction to take things in. This is often not as simple as we’d like, unfortunately.
Nuanced! I like it. Thanks Austin.
