Gym + global pandemic, how to proceed?

Do you recommend against going to the gym given the current pandemic? Is body weight fitness the way forward for the time being?

We agree with the CDC’s recommendations at this time: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) | COVID-19 | CDC

We do not recommend avoiding the gym unless you’re ill, a high risk population, or in a high risk area.

I am also experiencing the effects of the international freak-out from COVID-19. I am currently on lockdown on a compound who’s gym is closed indefinitely. There are some irregularly shaped objects around here that are heavy (e.g. sandbags, truck tires, rocks, etc.), but that is about it.

Getting small and weak is not an option. What kind of programming does the Barbell Medicine team recommend? Pick up and carry around the oddly shaped heavy objects? Or calisthenics? Any help would be appreciated, as I have a large group of disgruntled lifters who have been barred from entering the only place they care about- the gym.

Jordan, how do you define “high risk area”? Santa Clara County (SF Bay Area) has confirmed cases–does that make this a high risk area?

Edit: Actually, at this point much of the urban West Coast is considered high risk, no?
