Hello Drs,
My wife, 43, had COVID (positive test) in late September and has recently been experiencing loss over the last few weeks. The hair loss has been quite substantial—lots of hair after every shower—and now her hair is very thin. Obviously, this amount of hair loss has come with many tears and she has confirmed with several friends that they have also experienced hair loss after COVID.
So, I would greatly appreciate your feedback as to what she can do to help her hair to grow and thicken. I have heard that high protein supplementation helps in female cancer patients, but I love to know your thoughts.
Thanks and have a blessed day!
Paul
Given the recent infection, this may be due to telogen effluvium. There are no well-supported treatments for this condition, but in many cases it resolves on its own with time (i.e., hair tends to grow back). If you remain concerned, a consultation with a primary care physician or dermatologist may be helpful.
I’m not aware of any evidence that protein supplementation promotes hair growth.
Thank you Dr. Baraki! I appreciate your reply.
I also lost a lot of hair because of COVID and I had to have a hair transplant.
### Hi! I also had COVID a year ago. In my case, it was much worse than your wife’s. Unfortunately for many, it is listed among the post covid hair loss effects. But it varies. For some, it is more serious, and for some not so serious.
I’m so sorry to hear about your wife’s experience with COVID and the hair loss that has come along with it.
