I’m currently running powerbuilding 1 but had a general question for high-rep exercises. I’ve had heart surgeries a long time ago (cleared to train by cardiologist) so I get winded quicker than normal people. My deadlift is around 350lbs and a 220lbs squat. I find on higher rep exercises like 10 rep squats or the mayo rep rows I run of breath before my muscles are fatigued, (I.e I coudl lift the weights if I wasn’t winded). What would you advice for a situation like this? I find if I lower the weights I don’t really get a good workout. I’m between pushing it everytime (even if extremly out of breath) or lowering the weights. Thanks!
What can you squat for 10 reps and how long have you been doing sets of 10 in your training? I do not think the remote history of heart surgery is contributory, save for some medications you may be taking as a result of that procedure.
Thanks for the reply! Probably around 150lbs for rpe 9-10. My squat is really lagging behind my (mediocre) deadlift. Not at all I think, I’ve normally avoided such high reps for squats because I thought I’m held back by my cardio. Although, I’ve trained my Deadlift for reps before and that’s not as bad. So just starting to train in the 10 rep range for squats.
150lbs for a 10RM calculates out to a ~ 205lb 1RM, which is pretty close to your actual 1RM. If you were lifting 95 x 10 or so, that would be very disproportionate.
With that not being the case, a relatively recent introduction to higher rep sets, and no medication use that would artificially reduce conditioning, I would keep the programming and is. I would expect you to adapt to it over time.
