I am a rising junior in high school who has developed an interest in eventually becoming a medical doctor. I have always been interested by the human body and I believe that medical school is a good option for me in my future. Also, I am extremely interested in athletic performance (powerlifting, in particular) and I want to start learning more about it asap. Id love to hear suggestions regarding things I can start doing at this point in my education to prepare myself for pursuing medicine as a career if I choose to do so. Are there any textbooks or other resources that anyone would suggest that can help me get started in learning about general topics such as kinesiology, biology, anatomy and other similar topics? My classes next year include AP Biology and AP Mechanics but id like to do a lot of learning outside of school, as well. I am motivated and committed to learning, but a little lost at the moment. Id appreciate advice for my path.
As far as what to do now with your current interests, I would try to get exposure to as many different things in fields/topics that you find interesting! I think you’re setup for education wise right now and would encourage you to participate in as many sports/physical endeavors as you can. I don’t think I would recommend a great number of books at this point, as there is some foundational knowledge that needs to be acquired before technical books would be useful. That said, I do think the following non-exhaustive list of info-tainment-type books would be great to read:
Speed Trap by Charlie Francis Sports Gene and Range by David Epstein The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat by Oliver Sacks Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky Pandora’s Lab by Paul Offit, MD Why Do Men Have Nipples by Billy Goldberg, MD
Thanks for the reply. I will be checking out the books you recommended, and I am actually currently in the middle of reading The Sports Gene. Thanks again for the advice and everything Barbell Medicine puts out on the internet.
