HIIT question, aka am I overthinking this?

Recently added HIIT to my training, and began to wonder if I was misunderstanding the prescription. Wondering how other folks might be interpreting it…

Prescription calls for “every 2 min x 20 min, sprint 20 seconds”.

I took that to mean sprint 20 seconds followed by rest for 2 minutes repeatedly until a total of 20 minutes has elapsed.

OR…

…does it mean sprint 20 seconds then rest 100 seconds (i.e. combined time of 2 minutes) repeatedly until a total of 20 minutes has elapsed?

TL/DR : 120 second rest periods, or 100 second rest periods?

The latter

100 second rest periods, but it’s confusing.

When I worked out at a gym jones gym, this kind of work would be prescribed like this:

10 rounds of :20 work/1:40 recovery or 10x 20/100, which is how I end up noting it.
