Hip pain in older patients?

My parents had me when they were nearly 40 and are now ~70. My mother in particular is complaining about hip pain and I notice her leg muscles starting to atrophize. What is the most common cause for hip pain, and how does resistance training/lifting mitigate this? If it makes my hip socket and the muscles around it ‘stronger’ why would people who don’t lift tend to feel pain more often?

Unfortunately this is too large of a discussion for us to go through via a forum post. There are a number of conditions that may contribute to hip pain, e.g. osteoarthritis (among many others) – but the good news is that many of these can be managed similarly via exercise.

I would suggest checking out our content on pain, starting here Pain in Training: What To Do?
As well as checking out our podcasts on pain & rehab.
