How should training shoes fit?

I’m more so referring to oly lifting shoes but I guess really… all shoes?

I’ve seen a lot of “fitfluencers” and random running related YouTube content state that you should leave a .5” to 1” gap (basically a thumbnail) between your longest toe and end of the shoe box.

The “idea” is that your feet expand when walking/exercising and if you’re toes don’t have ample room to stretch it’s bad for “foot health.”

To me, this fit can feel clown shoey. My current lifting shoes I own were probably too tight when I first bought them, overtime they stretched and fit like a glove. If I’m buying new lifting shoes, am I doing myself a disservice by not sizing up a bit?

I don’t think there are unique considerations with lifting shoes. I use this same sizing as I do for any other shoes. They often stretch out a bit, but it’s primarily based on comfort.
