My sister (15, 120lbs, 5’5) has joint hyper mobility with a Beighton score of 6/9. Her physio consists of some band work and a few other little movements. So far this hasn’t done anything to help with the pain in her joints.
I’m thinking of putting her on SSLP to get her strong, and hopefully help with her joint pain.
Have you had experience with hyper mobility + strength training before?
Do you think it would help, and do you think there is anything we would have to take special care of?
I don’t personally have much experience with this situation, although it’s likely I’ve worked with people who have a degree of hypermobility without knowing it (or without a clinical diagnosis).
What is the reason she is thought to have joint pain? Hypermobility alone is not sufficient to explain this.
With careful attention to loading and technique (as with anyone else), they should be able to adapt to progressive loading. However, IIRC folks with connective tissue disorders tend to have impairments in their rate of force production capacity (i.e., power), so I would probably not include the olympic lifts, at least when starting out.
The current diagnosis is Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, which includes arthralgia as one of the symptoms (using the Brighton criteria?). Whether this pain is caused by the Syndrome or a (currently undiagnosed) co-morbid disorder, I don’t know.
She’s scheduled to visit a Rheumatologist soon, where we’ll hopefully find out more.
It’s good to know that there’s nothing major that we’ll need to deal with when training - not including the olympic lifts sounds sensible.
